Bipolar disorder is a very serious disease that can have symptoms that range from mild to very severe. The ups and downs or highs and lows that a person suffering from bipolar disorder goes through are not the same as what a person who does not suffer from it experiences every now and again. A person with bipolar disorder will experience mood swings that can range from low (which is depression) to high or very high (which is mania). This type of disease sometimes gets confused with other forms of depression and therefore requires attention and a proper diagnosis.

Researchers and the medical community are not completely sure as to what causes bipolar disorder to start in the first place. Most people who develop it come from a family where another member has it so the familial link has been established. But family history or a genetic predisposition towards the disorder are not the only factors that gives rise to it. This is a most definitely baffling disorder to diagnose.

Presently there are 5.7 million adults in the United States who are living with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder affects both males and females and it does not discriminate according to race, ethnic group, geographical location or socioeconomic class. The disorder most often develops when a person is in their late teens to early twenties. In fact, it is theorized that over half of those diagnosed with bipolar disorder develop it before they reach the age of 25. Children can also develop bipolar disorder although it is less common for it to appear at this time in a person’s life. However there have been cases where bipolar disorder has been diagnosed in children who are as young as six years of age.

It is not uncommon for bipolar disorder to be misdiagnosed as depression. For example, in those who suffer from bipolar II disorder the manic episodes are known as hypomania and are oftentimes so mild that they go completely unnoticed by others. This may account for the fact that the episodes of depression in a person with bipolar II disorder outnumber the episodes of mania by approximately 35 to 1.

Approximately half of all individuals who suffer from bipolar disorder visited three professional members of the healthcare community before a proper diagnosis was made. In the same way, an estimated 20 percent of those who go to see their doctor because they are depressed actually suffer from bipolar disorder. It is a sorry state of affairs to discover that it takes an average of 10 years for a person with bipolar disorder who is showing the symptoms to begin treatment and therapy, because it often takes this length of time for the diagnosis to be made.

Bipolar depression, also known as manic depressive disorder, is a serious form of depression that can’t be ignored. Manic depressive psychosis can affect all aspects of a person’s life, from their job to their relationships.

For your headache relief, you have choices. You can go to your doctor and get some hard-hitting drugs. If you’ve got chronic headaches, maybe migraines, that might be your best choice.

You can use over-the-counter drugs. These include acetaminophen, ibuprophen, and other tension relief drugs. They are good for most of headaches and repeatedly, they can be taken for greater power but are not as good to be there in first line of defence against a headache.

There are many natural methods of headache relief – even whoppers of headaches can be relieved in various ways.

Stress Relief For Headache Relief

Massage and relaxation can help with most headaches, since many headaches are tension related. Relax flat on a bed or the floor, and allow your muscles to sink down into the surface below you. Release some stress by consciously opennig your hands, and allowing the fingers to open. Unclench your jaw – quite a bit of stress is held in the jaw. You can also consider getting special stress relief balls that go under various parts of the body while you breathe and relax – they can help relieve headaches when used appropriately.

Let someone else massage you to give you headache relief. It doesn’t work to massage yourself – at least, not as well as having someone else’s help. You can relax more when someone else does it. For best headache relief, they should focus on your neck, shoulders, and scalp.

Turning Up (Or Down) The Heat

Headache relief can come from the use of heat and cold. Yes, either can be effective, so if one doesn’t help, try the other.

For heat, soak a washcloth or towel in hot water, wring out, and put on the head, neck, or shoulders. A heating pad can also help, though studies have shown that moist heat is generally most effective.

For cold, either soak a washcloth in cold water (like for the hot), or wrap ice in a cloth and apply. Be sure the skin stays like Goldilocks’ porridge – neither too cold or too hot!

Water, Water, Everywhere . . . Have You Had Enough To Drink?

Water is essential to survival. While chances are, you’re not going totally without fluids, studies have shown that even a bit of dehydration can cause headaches. If you’re starting to get a headache, drink some water. Full-blown headache may be avoided in this case.

Check The Caffeine In Your Life

Caffeine is a two-edged sword. Sometimes caffeine helps get rid of headaches – but too much caffeine on a daily basis can give a headache. Generally experts say that more than 600 milligrams a day (about four to seven cups of coffee) can cause headaches. How much coffee do you drink?

Benefit of Doubt: You may have felt insulted if you have been subjected to a joke. You can get over the unhelpfulness here by giving others the assistance of doubt as there could be a leeway of them doing it out of love.

Think Positive: Whenever you feel a downbeat vibe sneak in take it up as a oppose. Take it as a helpful encouraging feel. Make an effort to curb the negativity and make yourself happy all the time. Try to react to the situation in a affirmative manner way.

It is quite amazing when you stop to consider all of the different ideas and notions about proper dental care. These seemingly conflicting theories leave the patient – or more accurately – the consumer, in a sea of bewilderment most of the time.

For instance, is fluoride in mouthwash and toothpaste good or bad? Many dental experts believe that toothpaste, mouthwash and even topical treatments of fluoride harden your teeth and are therefore good. Other researchers say that any fluoride containing product put in the mouth spikes blood fluoride levels. Fluoride apparently tends to accumulate in parts of the brain as well.

Research like that done by Dr. Phyllis J. Mullenix, PhD. clearly makes you question even small amounts of fluoride showing up in our drinking supply and food supply – as many foods are exposed to fluoridated water. She also discusses that when they wanted to study even lower doses of fluoride for extended periods of time, that her funding was cut.

There are even dentists who are against fluoride’s use in the human body for any reason. Confusing, isn’t it? Who do we listen too? I can’t answer that question definitively for you but here are some thoughts that I will share on this aspect of dental health.

I am personally against fluoridation of drinking water. Despite the arguments in favor of forced medication of our drinking supply, I think it is wrong to ‘force’ any medication on a population. This behavior effectively side steps each person’s right to choose. On the other hand, the choice of personal dental care products is just that: a choice. Each person as the right to choose whether he uses fluoridated rinse and toothpaste.

When it comes to adding fluoride to the drinking supply, many scientists and professionals are against the use of fluoride while many others are in support of it. When you have this kind of debate between scientists, isn’t it best to error on the side of caution? Find out which tools can improve your oral health.

Depressive Episodes can be listed into at least eight groups. It is therefore important that victims of bipolar, parents, friends and co-workers know how to recognize the bipolar symptoms in a depressive mood. Be certain to educate yourself so you can offer help or seek it at the appropriate time for your friend or a loved one. Early diagnosis is critical with this mental disorder.

Loss of Energy: There is nothing mysterious involved with this bipolar symptom. Not having much energy when you try to compare it to the last few days. You still have a lot of energy and felt good and strong enough when you return from job. Your usual routine most nights would be to go for a run and a dinner out, but now you notice that you have run out of energy in the middle of the day. This can be seen by other members of the family, your close friends or coworkers that you have actually stopped what you love to do.

Fatigue ” Because of the vigorous action or efforts by the mind it becomes weary: Depression can cause physical fatigue and decrease in energy. Sleeping should make us feel refreshed, but with bipolar victims they become tired and unrefreshed. Every morning can be both difficult and tiring. Some on the other hand may have a different experience, during the day they are full of life but, once they get home they feel they have no more energy left.

Lethargy – state of being listless and unenergetic, drowsy, dull, indifferent and lazy: It is a very serious symptom. These people are unusually drowsy or lethargic – spending hours just sitting and doing nothing in a place. They become totally unresponsive and simply uninterested in doing anything because their feeling and mind is indifferent and lazy.

Diminished Activity ” Feeling of less important: This is usually caused by the loss of energy, being tired and listless. In other cases it may occur independently of those symptoms. If their level of activity begins to drop or non existence” an example will be she leaves her washing undone, or unable to do the simple things like raking the garden then, you know they have a symptom of bipolar.

Insomnia – inability to obtain sufficient sleep: Lying awake worrying, unable to get comfortable, feeling tensed or just having too many going on in the mind. Sleeping is a big task.

Hypersomnia ” sleeping a lot: People in depressive mode have been known to sleep endlessly; some can sleep for more than 20 hours straight.

Loss of Interest in Activities you used to Love: You normally love the sea, but now you are turning down your friends invitation to go and enjoy the day out in the sea. Marian loves to relax by walking but, now she wants to be left alone. Your son Bob has season tickets to the zoo but has been staying home, and when you ask, he just shrugs and says, “I am bored.” The problem with this symptom is, it may be easier for others to spot the problem than for those with the symptom.

Social Withdrawal: While it may be easier to describe bipolar symptom, it is quite difficult to notice it, because a lot will depend on the bipolar person’s personality. If the person is an outgoing person you may be able to notice the symptom when they stop going. But if the person is a well known “loner,” no one will be able to realize that the withdrawal symptom is more serious.

Other Changes to look out for

The eight listed above are those that are most commonly associated with the depressive episodes of depression, but there may be other changes in activity not listed above which may also come with depression.

This depressive disorder has been known to be with us since man started recording history. We read in the Old Testament, Job as well as the famous King David, suffered from this terrible illness. Hippocrates the Greek physician called depression, a black bile (melancholia). A clinical depression is a serious medical disorder that is negative in nature which affects how we feel, think and act. It has been written in literature arts for many, many years, but what does it mean when we refer to this mental illness – depressive disorder or a bipolar depression disorder? In the last century, depression was portrayed as a weakness of temperament which was inherited. Only in the beginning of the 20th century did Freud link the progress of depression to guilt with conflict.

Depression – The Two Divisions

Depression was divided into two ” during the middle of this century:

Endogenous: may be caused by the body itself but nobody knows its source and is probably linked to a genetic origin. Bipolar depression falls under this type of depression.

Neurotic or reactive: depression is caused from outside, like the death of a loved one, losing somebody special and the loss of the only source of income. In 70s and the 80s, the focus changed from the cause, to the effects of depression on victims.

Nobody knows what causes depression or bipolar depression, but all would agree that:

It is a syndrome that reflects severe sad, irritable mood which can be classed as abnormal sadness or grief. These feelings of sadness of depression are both intense and takes a long time when compared to the normal ups and downs.

The main signs are the physical symptoms like, crying spells, aches in the body, very low energy in both work, sex, thoughts, moods and behaviors. Eating, weight and sleeping problems are other problems included.

Depression increases the risks for coronary artery disease, HIV, asthma, and some other medical diseases. It can also increase the mortality rate of victims with this depressive conditions.

In the United States alone the huge financial and human costs includes – treatment and other indirect costs, like lost in productivity and absenteeism of workers can be enormous.

Bipolar Depression Symptoms

The unique trait of this illness is, it’s not the outside that is causing the depression, but the brain producing its lows with the feelings of worry, sad, angry, guilt, isolation and hopelessness. This disorder is caused by the brains neurotransmitters which can cause sleeping and eating problems and a shift in moods.

Problems with Depression if Not Treated

Like many serious diseases, bipolar depression can create havoc with those living together, it can drain out the energy level of those with the depressed person.

Bipolar Treatment Depression

Is a member of your family or a friend showing symptoms of bipolar depression like sleeping too much, sad, feelings of helpless, worthless, and hopeless with decreased energy and concentration. Seek medical advice near you so they can be given early bipolar treatment.

Bipolar I, also known as manic depression, is a relatively common psychological disorder. Bipolar disorder has three main types: Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and Bipolar III. The defining symptoms of bipolar disorder are episodes of depression and euphoria that cannot be explained by the persons situation.

Bipolar I disorder causes the individual to have a manic or mixed episode. A manic episode causes inflated self-importance, euphoria, racing thoughts, irritability, poor judgment, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, and impulsivity. Mania often causes the person to talk more or faster than usual.

Severe episodes of mania can cause hallucinations and delusions. The content of the hallucinations and delusions from mania are related to the other symptoms of the disorder. For example, someone who is experiencing an inflated self-esteem may have a delusion of being chosen by God or aliens for their superiority.

Mixed episodes are combinations of mania and depression. A person may literally feel depressed, helpless, and hopeless one minute, and practically invincible the next. The switching between depressed and manic symptoms during a mixed episode may occur over minutes, hours, or days.

Bipolar I disorder differs from the other mood disorders by the presence of a manic or mixed episode. If a person who has clinical depression or Bipolar II disorder has a manic or mixed episode, the diagnosis should be changed to Bipolar I.

Treatment for Bipolar I disorder often includes both medication and cognitive therapy. Mood-stabilizing medications such as Depakote are often used to help even out the persons mood and prevent manic episodes.

It is important for people to remember that the individual with bipolar disorder may have little or no control over the symptoms at times. Just like someone cannot snap out of having diabetes, neither can they turn off the symptoms of bipolar disorder.

For some people, the Bipolar I disorder causes very few problems while for others it may cause a daily struggle. A person with Bipolar I disorder may have different levels of severity in their lifetime. One episode may be severe while a previous one may have been mild.

Even if the person is taking their medication and actively participating in therapy, there may be a relapse of symptoms. If the symptoms return or worsen, the person should notify their mental health professionals.

When people are depressed where do they go? Depression which is a bipolar symptom is a crippling disease and if left untreated over time can get worse and in the process claim lives. Science and medical research has proven that medication can help people with the disease get out of their depression.

All in the Mind

People are asking when they try and deal with this illness where does all this begin, this depression in bipolar? The brain which is responsible for looking after our basic motor skills, such as walking and handling things it also is in charge of the way we feel (emotions).

Feeling Depressed

People with bipolar symptoms experience long durations of sadness, feelings of being pessimistic, hopelessness, empty moods, feelings of guilt. They can also experience worthlessness, loss of interest in activities that are considered to be pleasurable such as sex, sleeping too much or none at all, feelings of irritability and thoughts of death or suicide in times of depression. When in this state, they can be suicidal and wanting to take their own lives.

Bipolar Depression

The person with bipolar symptoms, in a depressive mood, will experience long durations of sadness, feelings of being pessimistic, hopelessness, empty moods and feelings of guilt. They also experience worthlessness, loss of interest in activities that are considered to be pleasurable such as sex, sleeping too much or none at all, feelings of irritability and thoughts of death or suicide. When in this depressed state, they can think about committing suicide and can eventually take their own lives.

Medications and Treatments for Symptoms of Bipolar

This mental illness is a serious disease that should be treated with careful management. It is important that this disease should be treated immediately as soon as the signs and symptoms appear. There are two main focuses of treatment; psychotherapy (non medicinal) and medication (prescribed drugs).

Psychotherapy

This type of therapy is useful especially for those going through mood changes which will help them control their emotions better. However, there are extreme cases where psychotherapy is not enough, so medication is usually prescribed for this bipolar symptom to normalize their emotions.

Depression and Medication

Neurotransmitters such as “serotonin” and “norepinephrine” are the special chemicals used by the different parts of the brain to exchange information. Although not proven that low levels of serotonin and norepinephrine cause depression in bipolar, it is believed that the increase level of these chemicals are linked to the depressive mood in people. Psychiatrists prescribe antidepressants drugs, to lift up these brain chemicals.

Popular Antidepressants

The two most common groups of drugs in the market today are:

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) Increases the brain’s level of serotonin, and when this chemical is increased the mood improves.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI) very effective in fighting depression.

Warning

All bipolar medication must be used strictly as prescribed by physicians or your doctor. The risk of overdose for some of these drugs can be lethal and if it says avoid certain food or alcohol, please adhere to the strict warning. Your life is both important and precious.
