Oppositional Defiant Condition

In order that a diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Dysfunction can be made, the disturbance in behavior must be causing substantial difficulties in school, in relationships with family and friends, and in the workplace. ODD will not be diagnosed if the therapist suspects that the teen’s behaviors are being directly caused by another psychotic or mood problem, such as bipolar problem.

A kid who has an Oppositional Defiant Condition exhibits a pattern of hostile, negativistic, and defiant behavior lasting at least half a year in time, during which four (or far more) of the following are can be observed:

Is often spiteful or vindictive.

Often actively defies or refuses to comply with adults’ requests or rules.

Frequently loses temper.

Is generally touchy or simply annoyed by other people.

Frequently argues with adults.

Generally deliberately annoys folks.

Often angry and resentful.

Often blames others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior.

It is a should to remember that a psychiatrist will think about a diagnosis of oppositional defiant condition only if the behavior occurs a lot more frequently than is typically observed in individuals of comparable age and developmental level. In other words, the issues and conflicts between teens and parents are as old as time itself, and some conflict is normal and inevitable. However, when the parent/child conflict becomes increasingly severe and appears to be spiraling out of control, then ODD might be considered.

Children who have oppositional defiant condition will show some of the same behaviors as those listed above for conduct disorder, including getting quite negative, angry and defiant. Nevertheless, with ODD, one does not generally see the mean or cruel behavior that is present in conduct problem, such as cruelty to animals.

Moreover, as kids in their teenage years are growing and learning, they will sometimes do some quite ill-advised things that can cause them problems, both legal and in school. Nevertheless, if this behavior does not repeat itself and is a one-time event, then a conduct condition is probably not present.

In support of any person which has taken care of a child having mental health concerns, specifically bi polar disorder as well as schizophrenia, My wife and I will not need to let you know that it’s 100 % pure hell on earth. Being parents, we have difficulty daily with the guilt associated with definitely not having the ability to provide enough for our own Son. Being the leader of our house I’m continuously searching for a healthier way to deal with this particular endless challenge.

Our son is now twenty-one and is living in an apartment; however, we must visit every single day to make sure he takes his medicine. He will never have what we would call a normal existence. It just breaks our hearts to believe that the small sweet innocent baby boy that we brought into our home at the really young age of 3 months old will most likely in no way maintain a career or possess a family of his very own. Anybody that doesn’t think that bi polar or schizophrenia is not a crippling illness, needs to witness the existence of our adopted son.

He would always want to drive! He had taken the bonds which his grandpa had given to him each and every birthday celebration since the 1st 1 and purchased a vehicle at his graduation. He furthermore signed up for a Vocational College to become an industrial electrician. I can not explain exactly how thrilled my wife and I were for him despite the fact that at that point the only thing which had manifested itself had been the bi polar disorder. We assisted by taking out a personal loan to assist in paying for the education. He’d only turned 18 a couple of months before.

I guess he made it through about four weeks of school before he began missing a day here and a day there. Before you know it he was missing two or three days at a time. Not long after he dropped out completely. We were very upset with him at that point not knowing or understanding that he not only had bi polar but now he was beginning to take on the mental illness of schizophrenia. We had no idea except that we began to see stranger and stranger behavior from him.

It wasn’t too much time after this that he totaled out his vehicle. He was driving too quick and slid it into a tree right in front of someone’s home. We still did not fully realize the illness at this point and just believed he was being irresponsible. He had quit college, wrecked his vehicle, did not have work, and wanted to sleep all the time. In our book he was just becoming lazy and irresponsible.

What we were clueless of was that the pacing, speaking with nobody, the sleeping, the unpredictable actions was part and parcel of bi polar and schizophrenia disease. The regrettable factor was that this was only the tip of the iceberg. All heck was starting to expose itself and we failed to recognize precisely what we were in store for. His bed room was in the basement and he wasted most of his time down there in most cases sleeping. On the other hand, he then would spend the majority of his nights up, going through the fridge and cabinets creating chaos. Not to say he seemed to be wandering through the entire home creating disturbance and keeping the rest of us awake.

Argument after argument occurred, but no progress was made. If you have any understanding of bi polar or schizophrenia you will know that without the right medicine it gets completely out of control. Well that was exactly what was happening. In the true sense of the word, things were getting crazy. Our solution was that we needed to be more forceful and demanding of what we expected of him. Wrong answer, at least in our case!

He was getting more and more delusional. He began referring to the home as his and we had been guest there. He began unusual gestures with his hands and head. He would stare right passed you without saying a word while you would be talking with him. Following, in a few seconds he would then answer a question you may have asked two or three minutes ago. He became more and more aggressive in his behavior. His mother started to get frightened of him.

This all continued until the time he totally erupted in to physical violence. He swung and hit his mom in the face. Despite the fact that I wanted to un-load on him, I threw him to the ground and kept him there till the police showed up. I never used that much energy to hold an individual down until that moment in time. He was battling with each and every oz of his being to get free. I was not going to allow that to occur until the police got there. He’d bite my arm that I had all-around his neck. I invested 12 years in the Marine Corps and never did I encounter something so totally spinning out of control.

I understand that I wanted to beat him to a pulp however I couldn’t simply because he was my boy. The police finally showed up and managed to hand cuff him. They recognized instantly that he had some form of psychological medical concerns. They did not arrest him based on our pleas to have him get psychological help. Rather they placed him on a hold in a community psychological locked ward.

As soon as he had been examined they instantly established he had not merely bi polar, but additionally schizophrenia. It had been like a light went on for us. It absolutely was great to understand that there was reasons for his actions and not that he had been merely a misfit. That has not necessarily made living any simpler; however we recognize much more about it. As a matter of reality we’re turning into experts through the University of Hard Knocks. Not really a university you would like to go to, believe me.

If you’re a parent who has a kid with either bi polar disorder or schizophrenia, trust me when I inform you that we understand. Get assist and stay focused.

Children develop differently than their peers, which may make it difficult to diagnose mental illness early. Normal behaviors at age four may be eccentric by age seven. Young children often have imaginary friends and strange experiences hearing voices, but once they grow older, these same playful interactions may be viewed as symptoms of schizophrenia in children. Even though the prognosis is worse for children than adult-onset patients, research is promising for the new generation of anti-psychotic medications. Continue reading →

The last thing a parent wants is to consider the possibility that their child may have some type of mental illness or brain disorder. Yet, it’s important that parents not ignore symptoms of schizophrenia in children if they see them. While most people are diagnosed in their mid-to-late-twenties, there are still cases of children as young as seven exhibiting the signs of schizophrenia. It’s child’s play to have an imaginary friend, but it’s a red flag if a child hears voices saying nasty things about him/her or remarks that there are voices conversing in his/her head. Kids who have no interest in friendships, who talk to themselves frequently or stares at things that are not really there may have schizophrenia.

The signs of schizophrenia are hardly ever observed in kids, although statistics show that 1 in 40,000 children are diagnosed with this ailment. In comparison, 1 in 100 grownups aged 18-35 are identified as having some kind of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia in children has a number of parallel attributes to autism and developmental disabilities. Exclusive to schizophrenia, though, are the hallucinations and delusions that typify the condition. Many kids also exhibit subdued emotions, social withdrawal, inattentiveness to their hygiene and elevated sensitivity.

If a child is seeing or hearing things that don’t exist, then he or she may be exhibiting early symptoms of schizophrenia. Children may exhibit gradual changes, such as becoming shyer or withdrawn or they may have an acute onset marked by fearful delusions that people can read their minds or are plotting against them. Affected children will often laugh at sad events, show little body language and have muted facial expressions. Other symptoms of mental illness include speech impairment, poor memory, difficulty paying attention and hallucinations.

All too often, children are given a wrong diagnosis of schizophrenia. Delusions and hallucinations are symptoms that distinguish it from something such as autism. These will not be isolated circumstances, but will go on for a minimum of six months. Normally a child begins to show symptoms at age 7, while an autistic child is more commonly diagnosed by age 3. At times the agitated fits of acute schizophrenia are mistaken as a bipolar, dissociative or personality disorder. Most children with this condition show no interest in friendship.

Currently, the outlook is not very bright for children showing symptoms of schizophrenia. Many of the antipsychotic medications on the market do not have documentation of clinical trials tested on children. Studies show that anywhere from 15 – 45% of young patients show little to no response to traditional medications, like haloperidol, loxapine, thioridazine or thiothixene. A new generation of antipsychotic drugs, like clozapine, risperidone and olanzapine show some promise, but more studies need to be conducted to determine long-term risks of taking such drugs. Short-term side effects include weight gain and sedation, but the risk of decreased white blood cell count, seizures and heart disease are yet to be measured with certainty.

If you know anyone who exhibits the symptoms of schizophrenia, or if you are having some of these symptoms yourself, a visit to the doctor needs to be scheduled as soon as possible. This way the appropriate schizophrenia treatment can be started before the problem gets worse.

The term headache is widely used to describe any pain you might be feeling around your temples, the back of your head, or in any part of your head. However determining what type of headache you have and the headache cause is important. When you know what are the causes of frequent headache you might be experiencing then you can learn how to better treat the pain. Sometimes painkillers alone will not sort out the pain. In more serious cases you might have a more serious underlying cause of your headaches.

Tension As Headache Cause

Tension headaches are probably the most common type of headache experienced by most people. The start of a tension headache is a tightness or pressure at the back of the head. This can include the neck. A tension headache does not concentrate on one part of the head , the sufferer often feel it on both sides of his head.

This headache cause has not been entirely done. The most popular belief of tension headache cause is muscle contraction around the skull. This type of headache can be brought on by physical or emotional stresses. If you have been under a lot of stress then it is likely that you have a tension headache due to emotional stress.

Performing certain physical tasks or sitting in certain positions for too long may also trigger tension headache. Simple over the counter painkillers can be used to treat a tension headache. Dealing with emotional stress more effectively is also helpful in eliminating tension headaches.

Cluster Headache Cause

Cluster headaches are another type of common headache. The pain will usually come from behind the eye. A good indication that you are suffering from a cluster headache is if the headaches tend to happen repeatedly over a period of days, weeks, or months. This will be followed by a period of no headaches.

Some medications used to treat heart disease can cause a cluster headache. Another cluster headache cause can be a change in sleep patterns or routine. Another possible cluster headache cause is genetic; if you have a family member who experiences this kind of headache then you may also experience this type of headache.

This type of headache cannot be treated with over the counter pain killers. It is necessary to seek treatment from a doctor. It is important to seek help quickly as this type of headache is hard to treat once a person has been experiencing these types of headaches for a long time.

Relax flat on a bed or the floor, and allow your muscles to sink down into the surface below you. Release some stress by consciously opennig your hands, and allowing the fingers to open. Unclench your jaw – quite a bit of stress is held in the jaw. You can also consider getting special stress relief balls that go under various parts of the body while you breathe and relax – they can help relieve headaches when used appropriately.

Let someone else massage you to give you headache relief. It doesn’t work to massage yourself – at least, not as well as having someone else’s help. You can relax more when someone else does it. For best headache relief, they should focus on your neck, shoulders, and scalp.

Turning Up (Or Down) The Heat

Headache relief can come from the use of heat and cold. Yes, either can be effective, so if one doesn’t help, try the other.

For heat, soak a washcloth or towel in hot water, wring out, and put on the head, neck, or shoulders. A heating pad can also help, though studies have shown that moist heat is generally most effective.

For cold, either soak a washcloth in cold water (like for the hot), or wrap ice in a cloth and apply. Be sure the skin stays like Goldilocks’ porridge – neither too cold or too hot!

Water, Water, Everywhere . . . Have You Had Enough To Drink?

Water is essential to survival. While chances are, you’re not going totally without fluids, studies have shown that even a bit of dehydration can cause headaches. If you’re starting to get a headache, drink some water. Full-blown headache may be avoided in this case.

Check The Caffeine In Your Life

Caffeine is a two-edged sword. Sometimes caffeine helps get rid of headaches – but too much caffeine on a daily basis can give a headache. Generally experts say that more than 600 milligrams a day (about four to seven cups of coffee) can cause headaches. How much coffee do you drink?

It is quite amazing when you stop to consider all of the different ideas and notions about proper dental care. These seemingly conflicting theories leave the patient – or more accurately – the consumer, in a sea of bewilderment most of the time.

For instance, is fluoride in mouthwash and toothpaste good or bad? Many dental experts believe that toothpaste, mouthwash and even topical treatments of fluoride harden your teeth and are therefore good. Other researchers say that any fluoride containing product put in the mouth spikes blood fluoride levels. Fluoride apparently tends to accumulate in parts of the brain as well.

Research like that done by Dr. Phyllis J. Mullenix, PhD. clearly makes you question even small amounts of fluoride showing up in our drinking supply and food supply – as many foods are exposed to fluoridated water. She also discusses that when they wanted to study even lower doses of fluoride for extended periods of time, that her funding was cut.

There are even dentists who are against fluoride’s use in the human body for any reason. Confusing, isn’t it? Who do we listen too? I can’t answer that question definitively for you but here are some thoughts that I will share on this aspect of dental health.

I am personally against fluoridation of drinking water. Despite the arguments in favor of forced medication of our drinking supply, I think it is wrong to ‘force’ any medication on a population. This behavior effectively side steps each person’s right to choose. On the other hand, the choice of personal dental care products is just that: a choice. Each person as the right to choose whether he uses fluoridated rinse and toothpaste.

When it comes to adding fluoride to the drinking supply, many scientists and professionals are against the use of fluoride while many others are in support of it. When you have this kind of debate between scientists, isn’t it best to error on the side of caution? Find out which tools can improve your oral health.

When people are depressed where do they go? Depression which is a bipolar symptom is a crippling disease and if left untreated over time can get worse and in the process claim lives. Science and medical research has proven that medication can help people with the disease get out of their depression.

All in the Mind

People are asking when they try and deal with this illness where does all this begin, this depression in bipolar? The brain which is responsible for looking after our basic motor skills, such as walking and handling things it also is in charge of the way we feel (emotions).

Feeling Depressed

People with bipolar symptoms experience long durations of sadness, feelings of being pessimistic, hopelessness, empty moods, feelings of guilt. They can also experience worthlessness, loss of interest in activities that are considered to be pleasurable such as sex, sleeping too much or none at all, feelings of irritability and thoughts of death or suicide in times of depression. When in this state, they can be suicidal and wanting to take their own lives.

Bipolar Depression

The person with bipolar symptoms, in a depressive mood, will experience long durations of sadness, feelings of being pessimistic, hopelessness, empty moods and feelings of guilt. They also experience worthlessness, loss of interest in activities that are considered to be pleasurable such as sex, sleeping too much or none at all, feelings of irritability and thoughts of death or suicide. When in this depressed state, they can think about committing suicide and can eventually take their own lives.

Medications and Treatments for Symptoms of Bipolar

This mental illness is a serious disease that should be treated with careful management. It is important that this disease should be treated immediately as soon as the signs and symptoms appear. There are two main focuses of treatment; psychotherapy (non medicinal) and medication (prescribed drugs).

Psychotherapy

This type of therapy is useful especially for those going through mood changes which will help them control their emotions better. However, there are extreme cases where psychotherapy is not enough, so medication is usually prescribed for this bipolar symptom to normalize their emotions.

Depression and Medication

Neurotransmitters such as “serotonin” and “norepinephrine” are the special chemicals used by the different parts of the brain to exchange information. Although not proven that low levels of serotonin and norepinephrine cause depression in bipolar, it is believed that the increase level of these chemicals are linked to the depressive mood in people. Psychiatrists prescribe antidepressants drugs, to lift up these brain chemicals.

Popular Antidepressants

The two most common groups of drugs in the market today are:

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) Increases the brain’s level of serotonin, and when this chemical is increased the mood improves.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI) very effective in fighting depression.

Warning

All bipolar medication must be used strictly as prescribed by physicians or your doctor. The risk of overdose for some of these drugs can be lethal and if it says avoid certain food or alcohol, please adhere to the strict warning. Your life is both important and precious.

Problems with School

There are alternative schools for bipolar children or parents usually arrange home school teachers for special classes especially those with a high academic potential. One of the biggest problem with affected kids is that in normal schools they are ridiculed and because of the symptoms usually gets them into trouble. While some children with bipolar symptoms actually want to continue schooling, a lot of teachers are just not up for the challenge. The fact of the matter is that schools have to act on what it deems best for students. So the unfortunate fact is that bipolar affected children are not accepted everywhere especially among their peers in schools.

Do not Know What to Expect

They say that there is never a dull moment around bipolar disorder children. They act out their bipolar disorder symptoms by way of words or actions which can surprise everyone. These children can be in high mode one minute and down to low the next. Just about anything and everything can upset them. When going through their tantrums they can hold anything, throw at others and threaten others or themselves in their anger and just around the corner ask for apology. One of their other trademarks is being defiant to those around them. Usually in their angry moments words such as; what will you do about it when they are asked to stop doing what they are doing. In some cases in school children with bipolar symptoms will tell their teachers that they know better.

Double Symptoms

Is when two symptoms show themselves as similar but one of them is not bipolar. There can be two disorders experienced at the same time, one of which is bipolar and the other similar yet hard to pinpoint.

Misdiagnosis

If children are not diagnosed you can be withholding appropriate treatment that will make them sick longer. And when we call somebody bipolar who isnt, in actual fact are preventing them from having the proper medications.

Given the Right Diagnosis

Given all the complexities of this disorder, a good doctor should spend enough time with the parents, finding out the different bipolar disorder symptoms and all the other comorbidities. Time should be given also talking to the child on how they are feeling. Information should be sought from teachers or psychologists for past and current evaluations. You may have to see those doctors several times because it can be several months to one year in order for the doctors to say with confidence that your child has bipolar disorder symptoms.
